Labyrinth, a well-known music group from Bandar Abbas at the intersection of Bandari sounds and African healing ceremonies, Zar, faced the pressure of state authorities in 2018.  Gaining local fame in Iran over the past decade, the musicians saw their career put to a halt following a public concert they held in the southern town that showcased elements of the Zar ceremony on stage. At the sight of the performance, the authorities locked all doors, ordered the end of the concert and arrested the lead musicians, Omid and Niaz. Daily pressure from the authorities followed the pre-trial release of Omid and Niaz, which led to LABYRINTH’s exile to neighboring country, Turkey, joining many other exiled Iranian artists.
